Beyz Phone Interview Tutorial

Why Phone Interviews Are Unique
Phone interviews are a standard first-round step in many North American hiring processes, especially for roles in tech, data, and consulting. Without the video element, they could appear more informal, but your responses are still equally important.
Fortunately, since there is no camera involved, phone interviews allow you more breathing room. This allows you to use Beyz’s Practice Mode to improve your performance in a discreet and efficient manner.
Step 1: Set Up the Environment
Here’s what you need for an optimal phone interview setup:
- A quiet room with stable signal
- Your phone on speaker mode, ideally propped up so you’re hands-free
- A computer with the Beyz Interview Assistant open in Practice Mode
This setup allows Beyz to hear your interviewer through your phone’s speaker and generate real-time responses on your screen without the interviewer seeing a thing.
If you don't know how to use Beyz AI, please check Beyz Tutorial or Beyz Setup Tutorial.
Step 2: Create & Customize Your Assistant
Set Up a New Assistant for Phone Interviews
On the Beyz Interview Assistant page, click “New Assistant” to build a new assistant just for this phone screen.
Make sure to select interview type, upload your profile and include the job description. It helps Beyz tailor responses to the specific role you're applying for.
Choose “Practice Mode” for Real-Time Audio Response
In your assistant settings, choose Practice Mode.
This mode allows Beyz to listen to your interviewer's voice through your computer microphone (as your phone is on speaker), and generate real-time, personalized responses based on what it hears.
It’s simple, invisible to the other side, and especially effective when the interviewer can’t see your screen.
Use Cheatsheets to Prepare Smarter
Before the call, you can add personalized content in the Cheatsheets, such as:
-
A customized self-introduction
-
STAR-based behavioral story templates
-
Role-specific technical highlights
-
Summaries of common phone screen questions
You can also save great answers as cheatsheets during your practice mode, so you’re building up your toolkit as you go.
Step 3: How Beyz Listens to Your Interview
Once your assistant is set and Practice Mode is active:
- Keep your phone on speaker mode
- Let Beyz interview assistant “hear” the questions via your laptop microphone
- As the interviewer speaks, Beyz will detect the question and start generating a personalized response in real time
You can glance at your screen to read, paraphrase, or even quote parts of the answer. Since this is a phone call, the interviewer won’t see that you’re reading. It’s your secret advantage.
Note: Since your computer microphone captures audio from your phone's speaker, it may pick up both your voice and the interviewer's. Beyz will generate answers based on detected questions, but you’ll need to judge which side is speaking.
Step 4: Reading the Answer While Listening
Beyz doesn’t just give you a script- it gives you real-time confidence.
- While the interviewer speaks, your screen displays tailored responses
- You can read and answer naturally, or buy a few seconds using our suggested Buy Time Phrases
- These short phrases give you time to scan and mentally prep before you reply
The result: smooth, confident answers without awkward pauses or second-guessing.
Mock Call: Use AI to Simulate a Phone Screen
Want to prep before the real thing?
Beyz lets you simulate a mock call using AI:
- Use “Generate Question with AI” to create practice questions from a virtual recruiter or hiring manager
- See how Beyz responds in real time, and refine your delivery
- You can also manually input questions - perfect for preparing responses to things like salary expectations, technical challenges, or resume gaps
Mock calls help you rehearse both content and pacing so you’re fully ready when the real call begins.
Practice mode is helpful for anyone doing last-minute prep, refining their phrasing, or calming nerves before the real thing.
Extra Tips for Phone Interview Success

- Smile while speaking: yes, they can “hear” it
- Keep a notepad handy for quick reminders or follow-ups
