Self-Introduction Strategies: Showcase Your Skills, Not Just Your Resume

Just as you need to tailor your resume based on the JD, the self-introduction should also be aligned with the JD.
However, a self-introduction should not repeat your resume; instead, it should incorporate your personal stories and achievements.
As a senior once told me a long time ago: Everyone loves listening to stories.
A self-introduction is essentially a short story about yourself.
No matter if it is a group interview or a one-on-one interview, it typically starts with a 1-3 minute self-introduction, like:
Please introduce yourself / Please tell me about yourself.
For this question, interviewers mainly want to know:
- Your communication skills
- Your fit with the company and the role
For me, self-introduction includes three elements:
- Basic information about myself
- Hard skills align with this position
- Soft skills align with this position
Here is an example of Global SEO Manager in an actual example
- Hard Skills: SEO Strategy & Execution, Technical SEO
- Soft Skills: Stakeholder Management, Cross-team Collaboration, Vendor management.
So as an entry-level candidate, I will introduce myself like this:
Hi, my name is XXX, and now I am a master student at XXX university, majored in XXX.
As part of my coursework in digital marketing analytics, I worked with 5 classmates on an SEO case study where I used Semrush to conduct keywords research and optimize blog content for on-page SEO. By improving meta tags, headings and internal links, we simulated a 30% potential increase in organic traffic.
Additionally, I completed an internship at XYZ Company, where I assisted in SEO audits, indentifying technical issues such as broken linkd and slow-loading pages using Google Search Console.
Beyond hands-on experience, I recently completed Google Analytics certification to deepen my understanding of website performance metrics.
I am excited about this opportunity at Aircall and I would love to contribute my analytical mindset, SEO skills and eagerness to learn to help optimize your digital presence.
You may notice that this self-introduction does not fully cover the skills listed in the JD.
However, a well-crafted self-introduction is not just listing your qualifications; it's about telling a compelling story that highlights your strengths, potential, and passion for this role.
Next time, when you need to do a self-introduction, put your resume and the JD together and match them, use some examples to illustrate, and let your story make an impact.
